Montgomery Police arrested a fifth suspect Thursday in connection with an October mass shooting that killed two and injured 12.
The Montgomery Police Department said in a statement posted to Facebook Friday that Ivan Floyd, 22, was charged with certain persons forbidden to carry a firearm. He was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Facility, according to the statement.
Floyd was also charged with robbery in the first degree, theft of property in the first degree, and theft of property in the second degree, which happened on Sept. 29, according to the statement. Police said those crimes were not connected to the shooting.
“MPD extends its gratitude to local and federal law enforcement partners for their continued support and collaboration, which have been instrumental in advancing the case,” the statement said.
The shooting, which took place during celebrations after a football game, killed Jeremiah Morris, 17, and Shalanda Williams, 43.
Four others were arrested last month. Kemontae Hood, 21, an unnamed juvenile and Dantavious McGhee, 19, were charged with one count of capital murder, nine counts of first-degree assault and three counts of second-degree assault. Javorick Whiting, 19, was charged last week with one count of attempted murder. Whiting was later released on bond, which sparked criticism from city leaders.
The shooting sparked a war of words between state Republican leaders and city officials, who tend to be Democratic. Attorney General Steve Marshall accused Montgomery leaders of a “stubborn refusal to acknowledge they have a serious problem.” Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed invited Marshall to meet with him about solutions and condemned state lawmakers for passing permissive gun laws in the last several years.
